Most people don’t pay much attention to their toes, but those ten digits can actually provide some valuable and potentially life-saving clues to your health. Our podiatrist at Granger Podiatry is trained in all matters related to the foot and ankle, and is experienced in the signs your toes and toenails are providing in terms of health matters that need attention. Scheduling regular visits to our friendly, comfortable office are an important part of your health routine, especially as you grow older.
Here are five warning signs to be aware of:
- Numbness, tingling or burning sensations in the toes are possible symptoms of diabetes. This occurs when high blood-sugar levels damage nerves in the extremities. Patients should be aware that losing feeling in the toes can signal diabetic foot infections, which could potentially lead to amputation if not treated promptly.
- Dark vertical lines under a toenail, especially on the big toe, can be a sign of melanoma, a form of cancer that begins in the skin. Not all discolorations of the toenails are signs of melanoma, so it’s best to let our podiatrist perform an examination if you have any concerns.
- Concave, or spoon-shaped toenails can signal anemia, an iron deficiency. Some people are born with concave toenails, but if this develops later and all of a sudden, let our podiatrist take a look.
- Chronically cold feet are a sign of poor circulation and possibly heart disease. A disorder known as Raynaud’s syndrome, which affects small blood vessels in the fingers and toes, can cause the extremities to turn white or blue in the cold.
- Toes that become inflamed and painful may be signs of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that affects the joints.
