Do you ever wake up, step out of bed, and feel a tinge of foot pain as you start moving? At the office of Granger Podiatry, we can help!
Having pain in the heel of your foot is a common complaint and can be very irritating. This type of pain is often associated with a condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the tissue in your foot that can cause heel pain and swelling.
Heel pain can also be a symptom of other types of conditions such as a fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, and nerve damage. While this type of pain is usually not a sign of something serious, it’s always important to see your doctor for a diagnosis. With an accurate diagnosis, your doctor can rule out any underlying conditions and determine the optimal treatment for your needs.
With plantar fasciitis, the heel pain is usually worse in the morning when you first get up and step out of bed, or after sitting for extended periods. Often the pain subsides throughout the day as you stretch the heel by walking and going about your daily activities. But it can be severe enough to interfere with your normal activities. Fortunately, there are a number of non-surgical recommendations to help reduce the swelling and ease the pain. Your doctor will likely show you special exercises and stretches to do every day. It can be helpful to wear supportive shoes most of the time and avoid walking barefoot as that can add stress to the foot. Icing is also highly recommended as a good way to reduce inflammation.
The main goals with heel pain are to see your doctor to determine the cause of the pain so that you can get on the right path to alleviating it quickly and getting back to your regular activities.
